Every Place Has a Story
DIGITAL DESIGN
July 2022
Every Place Has a Story is a visual representation of Germany's Modern History (1500 CE - present). This project reveals how history is a balance of destruction and creation.
Explanation
History is the soul of any place. “Every place has a story” is a visualization of Germany's modern history (1500 CE - present).
The visualization shows history from 2 perspectives. One represents natural vs man-made history and another symbolizes destructive vs creative history. The combination of all the metrics reveals how history is balanced in itself.
The circle displays a metric of 136 events and incidents in chronological order. On the left, there are 4 particles showing Diseases, Discoveries, Wars & Inventions. These particles are connected via threads to their destination events on the other side of the circle.
The project moves forward by describing each metric with a detailed graphical presentation.
The 4 frames of animated graphs reveal each of the metrics individually. On X-Axis, the graph shows the chronological order of centuries of modern history and on Y-Axis it reveals decades in increasing order.
Wars
The graph displays 25 major wars in Germany's modern history. The particle on the graph reveals information about the incident when clicked on it. The size of each particle defines the number of deaths that happened during the war and the placement represents the timeline of the incident. Entries, where 2 particles are horizontally placed means incidents, occurred at the same time.
Diseases
The graph displays 5 major diseases that impacted Germany. The particle on the graph reveals information about the disease when clicked on it. The size of each particle reveals the global deaths the disease caused and the placement defines when the first case of that disease was identified.
Inventions
The graph shows 10 German inventions that impact human civilization. The particle on the graph reveals information about the invention when clicked on it. The size of each particle reveals the estimated number of sales in Billion dollars in 2021 and the placement shows the year of the invention.
Discoveries
The graph shows 10 German discoveries that impacted human civilization. The particle on the graph reveals information about the discovery when clicked on it. The size of each particle reveals an estimated number of people directly impacted by the discovery each year and the placement shows the year of discovery.
